Moving can be a stressful time for everyone in the family, even the family dog. Dogs are creatures of habit, and although they are adaptive, they can be affected negatively by sudden changes in their environment. The same can be said for their perceptive nature. Dogs can sense when their pack leader is on edge and can mirror those feelings of stress and anxiety. The resulting behaviours can be destructive and very undesirable. Here are some tips for making your dog’s transition to a new home as easy as possible.
First and foremost, make sure your dog is wearing up-to-date identification and that you have recent photos of your pet. Also, have all emergency phone numbers handy, like your dog’s vet clinic and the local humane society or dog pound, as well as your dog’s immunization certificate and health records. It would be unfortunate if your dog was to escape during your move, but at least you’ll be prepared.
As the date of your move approaches, try and maintain your dog’s routine, including feeding schedules, and exercise. Before you begin packing up your things, and especially when big articles start to be moved, ask a friend or family member to take your dog for a few hours or a few days. Or, if your dog is familiar with the local kennel, perhaps board him out until your things are moved to your new home. Choose the option that will be more familiar and less stressful for your best friend.
Cross-town moves are slightly easier for transitioning a dog to a new home, so some of the following suggestions may be impossible if you are relocating long distances. If at all possible, bring your pet to your new home a few times prior to your moving in. Let him roam through the house at his leisure, and allow him to investigate the back yard for smells and possibly mark his territory. Also, as odd as it may seem, it may be helpful to pack up a stool sample and bring it to the new yard. Yes, he’ll know it’s his, and even though he may not remember ever being there, it may make him feel more at home.
In the case of long distance moves, it may be wise to pack a water supply from the old house. Dog’s stomachs can become upset with water changes. Keep your pet’s diet as bland as possible at this time. Do not introduce new treats, bones, or food until your dog is completely settled in his new home. In the case your dog has sudden vomiting or diarrhea, have some Bismuth Subsalicylate liquid (the pink stuff) on-hand.
Finally, do your homework prior to your move. If a new vet, boarding kennel, or doggie daycare will be needed in your new location, make sure you ask your current facilities if they can recommend an establishment in your new area. Or, consult the internet, send emails, and ask questions pertinent to your dogs needs.
Of course, some dogs, like people, handle stress differently. That is to say, some dogs are more neurotic and might act-out when stressed, while others take change in good stride and sleep through the entire process. Only you know your dog and which tips will be more helpful for a smooth-move.
