Hosting many open houses, I receive questions from parents and families about local schools, their distance from the home and are they a good school? I am not a school expert, but what I do provide is up-to-date information about academic performances about the school and their province-wide ranking.
When you are moving, one of the important deciding factors are school districts and ensuring your child is in the best school possible for the area you want to live in! An education is important but an education with a great school is highly important. Many families prefer to move on summer holidays as to not disrupt their child’s school year. That being said, you need to research a great school that receives great report card marks and you feel is a great fit for your child.
Here is a fabulous resource tool to help you! The Fraser Institute is an independent non-partisan research and educational organization based in Canada. It contains ‘report cards’ on Canadian schools and how they are performing. They produce a yearly publication which is divided by province and either primary or secondary schools (public and catholic) basing information on academic performance. It is very user-friendly, free and a great resource at your fingertips to help you with such an important decision!
Not only do you have this information at your fingertips to discuss with potential principles and teachers, but teachers and others may use this tool to see the comparisons to other schools and discover what they have achieved. This could result with changes for the better at their school.
When moving to a new home, it can be very stressful considering many options to ensure your family is happy; transit, parks, malls, grocery stores etc. They all play a role, but living in a school district that you will most comfortable knowing your child will be receiving a great education is probably top of the list.
Helpful Hint: Before you are attend an open house to find your next home, do a little research of the location of the home and its local schools. Go to The Fraser Institute site and review the rankings. It may save you time and stress!
