Today, I will continue from where was left off to go into questions a Landlord can and cannot ask you, the prospective tenant.

As it stands, a landlord will want to figure out whether you will be a good tenant, however there are only certain questions they are permitted to ask.

The questions asked will be assessing your ability to pay rent, and your ability as to whether you can keep the rental unit in good condition.

You have to prepare yourself for questions about your personal credit and previous rental experiences; keep in mind that you might be required to have personal references and contact of former landlords if you have any.

The questions a landlord can ask include:

  • What is your income?
  • Where do you work?
  • Will you have roommates living with you? If yes, what are their names?
  • Do you have pets?
  • Do you smoke?
  • Could you provide written permission for a credit check?
  • May I see your references and am I able to contact them with any questions?

Questions a landlord cannot ask you include:

  • Do you plan on having any more children?
  • What is your ethnic background, religion or sexual preference?
  • What is your marital status?
  • Will your family visit you?

The questions listed for what a landlord cannot ask you are based around the fact that they infringe on your rights under the Human Rights Code.

It is important to know your rights, and treated with the respect you deserve.
