September 11th marked the start of construction of the Urban Ecology demonstration project, which is an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly home being built in Winnipeg.
This home will be constructed by Winnipeg Housing Rehabilitation Corporation (WHRC), as part of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC’s) EQuilibrium Sustainable Housing Demonstration Initiative. This program encourages builders and developers to build the next generation of sustainable housing across Canada.
The Government of Canada is pleased with the housing sector developing such homes, and congratulates WHRC on their winning design notes Minister of State Steven Fletcher.
Urban Ecology gives people in the region an opportunity to see how a beautiful, healthy home can be made to conserve both energy and resources and reduce pollutant emissions.
Urban Ecology will be integrating solar energy systems into its design and construction, high efficiency appliances, water efficient fixtures and building materials with lower pollutant emissions.
It will be a two-storey duplex on an infill site in an established downtown area.
Urban Ecology represents a new approach to the urban environment. It will demonstrate the principles of EQuilibrium housing and its principles.
So far, this project has received over $160,000 in funding from the Winnipeg Housing and Homelessness Initiative (WHI). WHI is a partnership made between the Government of Canada, the Province of Manitobe and the City of Winnipeg.
This is truly a great project and once it is complete we will a house that should not be missed. Stay tuned for updates on the construction and when tour dates begin.
