On Monday, December 7th, during the executive committee meeting, councillors and the mayor received a report from the engineering department regarding the process that is required to submit the Ross School building for government funding consideration as an affordable housing project.
The problem that has been brought up is that Moose Jaw does not actually own the Ross School. Therefore, in order to make any funding application, the first step to be made is to discuss with the Prairie South School Division to see if the building is even available for affordable housing.
The administration has then recommended the executive committee to contact the public school division to discuss the availability of Ross School.
In the report it suggested that the city would assume ownership of the Ross School throughout the process.
The mayor then noted that a private developer or non-profit developer organization could also develop the building for affordable housing purposes.
This is a great concept, converting a school for affordable housing.
It goes to show that with creative thinking, you can make do with anything you are given.
The fact that the initiative has been taken shows that Moose Jaw is serious in bringing affordable housing to residents of Moose Jaw.
