Senior Housing Project in Haines Junction Begins
September 24th 2009, marked the opening of a new housing project for seniors in Haines Junction.
The Government of Canada and the Yukon Government have contributed almost $2.3 million to the project through the Canada – Yukon Affordable Housing Initiative to build six affordable housing units.
The commitment made by the Government of Canada is to create affordable housing available in the Yukon and across Canada for those who need it the most.
This investment will help provide safe and affordable housing for seniors.
The Yukon Housing Corporation has worked directly with seniors in Haines Junction on building concepts and potential locations within the community.
This project highlights the benefits of cooperation between both the Government of Canada and Yukon Government; it only shows what can happen when they collaborate on a project.
Fulfilling these housing needs is necessary to help Canada grow, and help keep the population happy.
The housing complex will contain a total of nine 1-bedroom units designed specifically for seniors, in addition to common space.
In 2008, we saw the Government of Canada commit more than $1.9 billion over a span of 5 years to improve and build new affordable housing, and to help the homeless. Along with Canada’s Economic Action Plan, building on an additional onetime investment of more than $2 billion in a span of 2 year, not to mention another $2 billion to municipalities for housing related infrastructures, we will be seeing many projects like this throughout Canada.
