Premier Brad Wall announced on August 31st, that the Town of Meadow Lake, will officially become a city in November. Meadow Lake’s history traces back to a Hudson Bay trading post.

Looking at it in one perspective, despite being in a recession, there is still growth within Canada. The growth in Meadow Lake is being driven by agriculture, energy exploration and the potential of oilsands development.

Meadow Lake was incorporated as village in 1931, a town in 1936 and now a city in 2009.

In Saskatchewan a community must have a population of 5,000 or more in order to get city status. Meadow Lake fell short of this number in the 2006 consensus, however in the past three years there has been a lot of growth.

The health card number let us know that were over 6,500 residents.

Meadow Lake is nearly 300 KM northwest of Saskatoon, and it will be the northern most city in the province.

The last town to be declared a city in Saskatchewan was Humboldt I 2000; with the addition of Meadow Lake it means that there are 14 cities in the province.
