The Saskatchewan government is trying to help 23 people who were forced out of their apartment due to safety hazards.
The Regina building unit was deemed by the Fire Commissioner’s Office unfit for habitation due to numerous violations.
The violations include no fire alarms, inadequate fire escape and windows that do not open.
The tenants include some who are on social assistances, and have been told last week that they had to move out on December 7th.
Many tenants have already paid their rent for December, and are lost on how to come up with more money for new accommodations.
This is completely unfair for them to be removed from their rental units for problems that are not their fault, not to mention that they have at this point, lost their rent.
The provincial government had a meeting to discuss with the tenants and it was made aware that hey are organizing a class action lawsuit to collect their rent money from the landlord.
Director of the Office of Residential Tenancies noted that she is trying to get an expedited hearing so that all tenants can go before a hearing officer at the same time.
It is unfair to the tenants, and I hope that this situation works out in their favour.
