Realtors are lobbying the provincial government to adopt standards for cleaning up houses that were used to grow and manufacture drugs.
In a recent report, the Alberta Real Estate Association (AREA) released guidelines from commissioned experts for air quality in former drug houses.
It has been identified that there is no standard in the province or anywhere for Canada as a matter of fact to remediate the air quality.
There are many problems associated with these homes. With the added humidity from growing marijuana plans, or cooking methamphetamine often creates mould in the home, and it can have serious impacts on health.
Real estate agents have no way of determining if drugs were produced in the home they are selling, and if they do not know, then they are not serving their clients correctly, which is not how they want to go about their business.
People in Medicine Hat have already purchased homes that were form grow-ops, and the real estate agent was not made aware of this fact.
There has to be strict guidelines for these types of houses.
The real estate association wants the province to require certification that homes used in drug operations have been adequately reclaimed before they are sold on the market.
