Northern Housing Building Demonstration Pushed Forward By Canada’s Economic Action Plan
The Nunavut Housing Corporation has learnt how to assemble pre-built housing units before the expected delivery to the Northern territory’s communities in 2010.
Funding for this new housing is part of a combined federal-territorial investment of $112 million over a span of two years, which is under Canada’s Economic Action Plan which is providing a onetime investment totalling more than $ billion to renovate existing and build new social housing in Canada.
The investment in Nunavut includes a federal investment of $100 million for Northern housing, and it does not require cosh-sharing by the territory; the $12 million is equally cost-shared for new housing for seniors and persons with disabilities and for renovations and retrofit for existing federal assisted social housing.
The pre-built housing units use Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs); due to the North’s short construction season, SIP housing units can be closed in very quickly. Thus allowing interior work to continue throughout the fall and winter weather conditions; there will be about 141 SIP units delivered to Nunavut communities in 2010.
By using SIP housing units, it is addressing and meeting Nunavut’s housing needs; SIP units far exceed energy efficient standards, which means less operating and maintenance costs in the Arctic environment.
