Medicine Hat City Council has enthusiastically endorsed a long term vision for Medicine Hat’s downtown core.
The only problem is how to turn the vision that has been on paper into a reality.
The council has approved the Downtown Redevelopment Plan as presented by the city’s superintendent of planning services and the consultant who worked on the plan.
The plan has been in the works for more than a year, and it was one of the council’s named priorities for 2009, which is meant to create a safer, pedestrian oriented downtown that capitalizes on Medicine Hat’s historic nature which will not only attract tourists, but also residents of Medicine Hat to live and shop downtown.
It has been acknowledged that there are some downtown stakeholders that have concerns about the plan; however the City Centre Development Agency’s (CCDA) development committee hopes that that the city will continue to consult with the community along the way.
This project will bring bigger and better things for Medicine Hat; it will make the city more attractive for newcomers and Canadians alike.
The Downtown Redevelopment Plan calls for the project to come before the council as early as January.
I for one cannot wait to see this project go into action as it will be able to make the city more attractive and it will ultimately make it a better environment for both current and new residents.
