A local crematorium will soon be offering Moose Jaw Funeral Home customers more funeral options.
In the February 9th council meeting, the council passed a zoning bylaw amendment allowing Moose Jaw Funeral Home to build a crematorium at 268 Mulberry Lane.
The facility is set to be fully constructed by the end of the year and open in January. It will be offering improved cremation services for Moose Jaw residents who are planning funeral arrangements.
As of now, the funeral home is waiting on crews to connect waterlines to the property. Once that is done, the crews will be pouring cement and start erecting the structure.
Business co-owner, Jeff Ostie has noted that once the crematorium is complete, it will be able to offer better scheduling options for customers wanting to cremate loved ones remains, because the funeral home will not have to contract out of cremations.
Now the reason this is on realtykitchen.com is the heated debate that it has gotten from those who live in the neighbourhood.
Personally I do not find it reasonable to place a crematorium so close to Moose Jaw resident’s homes. When they moved into the neighbourhood, they were not planning on living adjacent or a few blocks away from a crematorium.
It has already been noted that there will be no smell coming from the crematorium, however that still does not solve the problem of having it right next to homes.
In British Columbia it is written that a crematorium should not be cited close to a neighbourhood, now the question that comes up from this is what makes Alberta any different? Shouldn’t this guideline follow through?
Well it has already been decided on, and construction is nearly finished. Nothing can be done at this point, but it is still good to let your voice be heard.
