The Government of Canada is committed to making affordable housing for British Columbia and across Canada for those who need it the most.

The new units in New Westminster will provide people who are homeless or at risks of homelessness with access to affordable housing that meets their specific needs.

British Columbia is providing a subsidized mortgage of $7 million for the development. This funding will help people who are homeless or at risk to move beyond a temporary shelter into a more secure housing. This allows them to gain greater self reliance and achieve suitable employment.

Construction began in July 2009 as a partnership was made between the federal and provincial governments and the Lookout Emergency Aid Society. The Government of Canada has provided a $1.65 million grant through the Affordable Housing Agreement.

Lookout Emergency Aid Society will be managing and operating the Garfield Hotel. Residents will be receiving life skill training programs on cooking and nutrition, budgeting, and basic hygiene. This allows them to gain the necessary skills to move towards independent living.

Reducing homelessness and increasing affordability is a key agenda for British Columbia. The 2009 – 2010 budget for affordable housing and shelters is $450 million, nearly 3 times as much as 2001.
