Construction Phase of Whitehorse Affordable Family Housing Project Launched
On September 25th, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the Yukon Housing Corporation launched the construction phase of a Whitehouse Affordable Family Housing project.
There is an $8.5 million federal contribution to the project through Canada’s Economic Action Plan (CEAP); the government plans on stimulating the economy and create jobs during the global recession.
Recognizing the needs of the North, CEAP provides a $200 million investment over a period of two years. This includes $50 million for the Yukon to support the renovation and construction of new social housing units.
Overall, CEAP includes $2 billion for new and existing social housing, plus another $2 billion in loans to municipalities for housing related infrastructure.
As you can see, the Government of Canada is committed to making affordable housing available in the Yukon as it has been doing across Canada for those who need it the most.
Construction will be of a 32-unit apartment style affordable housing project on Nisutlin Drive in Whitehorse. Construction will continue throughout the winter in order to generate employment for trades.
Completion is anticipated for the fall of 2010.
The two storey wooden frame construction will be featuring SuperGreen energy efficiency standards and Accommodating Home standards for a barrier free living environment.
The contract for construction of the four 8-plex buildings has been awarded to NGC Builders Ltd.
There is another project in Whitehorse that is being funded through CEAP and is a renovation that will be resulting in 3 unites for adults living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. The federal contribution for this project is $70,000, and work is expected to be completed fall 2009 through the Options for Independence Society.
The CEAP is contributing largely to development of housing needs across Canada. It is great to see this and see that the economy is also getting a boost through the jobs that are being created.
