Council members have approved the municipal contribution towards the proposed $1.3 million budget for the 2012 Alberta Summer Games after a presentation was made by Kevin Kvame, chairman of the Lethbridge Sports Council.

If this local bid is successful, then the majority of the city’s support would be in-kind gifts in the form of transportation and rentals.

If the 2012 Alberta Summer Games were to generate a net surplus, then 1/3 of it, a maximum of $250,000 would be returned to the city.

With this funding commitment now secured, the sports councils’ bid committee must not put the final touches on the bid where it will be submitted to the province of Alberta by October 16th.

The Alberta Summer Games began as a provincial government initiative for amateur sport. This has provided an opportunity all Albertans to participate. The last time Lethbridge hosted the Alberta Summer Games was in 1996.

The chances of Lethbridge securing the Alberta Summer Games are quite good, especially with the opening of the new sports stadium at the University of Lethbridge serving as the centrepiece of the bid.

Lethbridge is the right size for the Alberta Summer Games, and there are the proper facilities available.

Kvame noted that the recent summer games in Medicine Hat and Red Deer netted surpluses of $350,000 and $534,000 respectively.

A decision on the site of the 2012 Alberta Summer Games is expected in January.
