Human trafficking occurs all over the world, even in Canada is no different.
Savelia Curniski spent time in Moose Jaw discussing the problems of human trafficking and its current growth. Curnicki is the president for an organization called Nashi – a volunteer group in Saskatchewan, which helps bring awareness to the issue.
Cruniski noted that to by a slave it is a minimum cost of $100; imagine, the cost of groceries is the value of human life. There are people in the world who do purchase slaves, and no matter what we all say, unless action is taken, this issue will continue to worsen.
Curniski seeks to aid approximately 50,000 girls and boys who are sold into slavery annually. The figures show there is an estimated 2.5 million people enslaved today, a higher number than most might think.
The problem is not getting any better; in fact it is becoming increasingly worse. It is estimated that by 2012, there will be more money in human trafficking than in illegal trading drugs and arms.
This summer, 17 Canadians went over to help with the project of creating a safehouse, which will be named the Maple Leaf Centre. Here girls should be able to gain the confidence and life skills they need so that they can do something.
Human Trafficking is a serious issue, and creating a safehouse is one of the best ways to help avoid it.
