As true this may be, the design has needed to be adapted to Canada’s climate and geography, and at many times it has also reflected the uniqueness of Canadian Culture.

This is the start of a brand new series on RealtyKitchen.com; you will find yourself going through time examining the different forms of architecture Canada has see throughout its history.

By examining past architecture we can come and see how the present day’s architecture has come about, and ultimately have a better understanding of it.

Let me first start off by explaining a bit about Canada’s climate and geography.

Canada’s geography is highly diverse, thus there are important difference in architecture. In most of Canada, building materials are abundant, and the price of lumber and stone is low.

For the most part, Canada is secure from major natural disasters that can affect architecture of other nations. However, the Canadian climate needs to be taken into account for every structure.

Building must be properly insulated to protect against the extreme cold of winters; they must also be designed to survive the repeated cycles of freezing and thawing that can shatter stone and move buildings off their foundations.

In most of Canada, buildings have to be designed to survive a heavy weight of snow which has the potential to collapse certain structures.

On a provincial level, the coasts of British Columbia have heavy rainfall as a factor in building design. Therefore weatherproofing cannot be ignored, if ignored the consequences can become expensive.

In this series you will find examinations of different architecture, this includes the First Nations, Canadian architecture to modern day architecture.

Hopefully you all have as much fun reading these articles as we will be having writing them.
