I’ve already given you some ideas about some of the more obvious types of eco-flooring. Here are some other types you can consider, and a brief round-up of the topic.
Leather
It might seem a little outré for you, but leather floors are very hot right now. Not only do they often use recycled materials from jackets and belts (on a subfloor of cork), but they have a warmth that hardwood can’t match. They are also fairly durable, and come in a wide range of colours.
Recycled Glass
Glass can be broken up and reused to make terrazzo flooring. Terrazzo flooring is when pieces of glass are suspended in a concrete medium. The finished product is very hard and smooth, and has a look similar to marble.
Recycled Rubber
Mostly used for gyms because of the natural give of the material, recycled rubber floors are becoming more popular for other rooms, such as children’s playrooms. Recycled rubber is made from recycled tires.
When you are installing a eco-floor, you should think about what goes underneath it as well. Try to avoid plywood and particleboard, since many of these floors have formaldehyde and similar products. For your subfloor, try to use solid wood.
If you are still on the fence
As I’ve tried to show you, eco-flooring is not just about thinking about the environment. It is also about choosing something fun, exciting and fashionable for your next renovation. The options, colours and styles are nearly limitless – you will likely find something that meets your needs.
Eco-floors are also very durable. Since many of them forego volatile chemicals, they do not degrade quickly. And when it comes time to renovate again, you won’t have to worry about disposing of something poisonous or harmful.
But not all environmentally friendly products are made equal. Make sure you locate products that are certified by respectable agencies like FSC Canada. The Green Living Guide is also a great place to search for products that fit your new eco-friendly attitude. With eco-flooring becoming more and more popular, the search for eco-flooring should become easier over time – until there isn’t another option out there!
