City residents of Lethbridge will be seeing municipal recycling fees pushed up next year as city hall will be considering how to improve the local recycling depots.
On Monday September 21st meeting, city council approved a two year extension of the current contract with BFI Canada, which will be expiring September 30th.
This decision buys time for administration to examine different methods to revamp existing recycling depots. This would address the chronic problems of overflowing bins and litter placed around the depots.
Next July, residents will be seeing the recycling fees on their monthly utility bills increase by 20 cents, to $3.60 from the usual $3.40 per month. This increase will be paying for the 11 extra bins that were added last spring after residents began to complain about their recycling bins overflowing last winter.
The council had originally considered implementing the fee raise in January 2010; however it opted to defer it by having a $40,000 net surplus expected in the recycling budget.
City staff will be presenting their findings to the council by March 1st next year. This is an option that is not considered to be curbside recycling as it is still considered too costly.
