These compostable kraft paper bags are being introduced in order to encourage recycling of yard waste and send materials which might otherwise end up being dumped with household garbage.

Residents can also choose whether or not to mulch their leaves and dispose of them in their backyard compost bins or drop them off at the city’s yard waste recycling site which is located in the 700 block of 3 Avenue North.

The goal of the program is to give people options in recycling.

Within the next few weeks, every household in Lethbridge will be receiving a small sample bag with information concerning the program. Supplies of the bags can be bought at 15 major retail stores around the city.

The prices are specially made, 136 litre bags range anywhere from $0.40 – $0.80 each, and you can purchase them usually for packs of five.

The bags should be placed in the same location as any other household garbage; however it must be away from the waste collection carts. At the moment there is no limit on the number of bags that can be set out for collection, however there is a weight limit of no more than 10 kg.

Leaf collection will take place between Monday and Friday in the weeks of October 5th and November 2nd for residents whose regular waste collection day is Tuesday.

For residents whose regular waste collection day is Wednesday, then leaf collection will take place in the week of October 12th and November 9th; for residents whose regular waste collection day is Thursday,

then leaf collection will take place in the week of October 19th and November 16th; and for Friday collection, leave collection will take place in the weeks of October 26th and November 23rd.
