Decorating in a small space requires particular attention to things like organization and the way you use your space. But in fact, it’s easier to work with a small space than a large one, which can appear empty and dull without enough furnishings to fill it up. Think of your small space as cozy! And with a little innovation, you can make it a highly usable and extremely well put-together living space.
When you’re working with a small space, you can actually save money on furnishings because you don’t need as much as you would in a larger space. With the money you save on furniture and accessories, you can invest in a good book on getting rid of extra clutter. Staying streamlined and organized is key to making the most of your smaller home.
Here are some ideas to help you maximize the space that you do have:
- In the kitchen: Store rarely-used items in the space above your cabinets in attractive boxes or baskets. Hang pots and kitchen tools on racks and magnetic boards. Clear space in drawers by organizing things into containers you can display on the counter.
- In the living room: The use of light colours will go a long way towards opening this space up. Get your furniture to do double-duty: use a trunk or other interesting storage item as a coffee table, put a tray on your ottoman to make it a table/extra seat.
- In the bedroom: Use shelves instead of side tables if possible. If you’ve got lots of space in the closet, you may be able to build in storage and ditch the dresser. Use suitcases or boxes under the bed to store seasonal items.
- In the bathroom: Install a shelving unit over the toilet for extra storage. Make room for extra towels by using several nice hooks instead of one towel bar.
Generally, the rules of thumb are to avoid dark colours and keep clutter to a bare minimum. But with a little creativity, small space decorating is not only easy, it’s also ingenious and fun. You’ll find yourself discovering new uses for things you never would have thought possible.
