The hot item this Christmas was HD plasma screen TVs – everyone wanted one. What else can do justice to the Olympics or the lastest Blu-Rays?
But these new televisions do present a problem for home decorating. The standard attitude toward televisions in home decor was that they should never be the focal point of a room, and that they should be covered up as much as possible in wall units.
With the increasingly large size of plasma screens, this can be difficult. There are wall units that are being made to fit these larger screens, but the larger screens means that these units take up more space.
Another solution that is increasingly popular is to recess the TV in the wall, and to have something cover the TV when it isn’t in use, like a painting. The mechanism works by having the painting roll up when the TV turns on, and that rolls the painting back into place when the TV shuts off.
There are other options. You can also have a mirror installed in front of your TV that vanishes when you turn on the TV’s power. Or you can work with your television’s capabilities and use it as a digital picture frame by highlighting your favourite family photos.
When choosing where to place your television in your family room, consider the potential new difficulties you will encounter. If you are planning on hanging it from the wall, you will need to make sure that your wall can support the weight. Many people like to hang or place their TV on the mantelpiece of their fireplace. When you aren’t actively watching your TV, you can turn it to the fireplace channel, creating instant ambience.
And if you are resigned to making the television the focal point of your room but don’t feel happy about it, why not put bookshelves beneath it, with two reading chairs on either side? In this way, you can create two moods for your room: a quiet, bookish environment that faces away from the television, and a more upbeat one for when you are watching the television.
Working with a flat screen plasma TV can be awkward at first, but if you give it some thought, you can create a novel and exciting family room with it.
