When hiring a contractor, you will get an estimate of how much it will cost to get the job done, however it might occur that the contractor will find during the job that there is more work to be done.
To save yourself from this hidden cost, you have to completely understand your contract. Have it read by someone who understands the legalities and ensure it is fair to both you and the contractor. Have it stated properly what the cost of the job will be rather than an estimate.

A hidden costs to many homeowners are permit fees. Depending on the type of work, you might be required to apply for a work permit. Permits range from the type of work, whether the project is electrical, mechanical, plumbing or adding to the structure of your property.
Another hidden cost to homeowners is underestimating the cost of supplies and tools. Create a list identifying all of the supplies and tools you will need, if this is the first time you are doing the job, place some money in your budget for supplies you might not have thought about.
A hidden cost not too many people anticipate is breaking something and having to fix it. This is why you need to do research before attempting the project, this way you are completely prepared.
A home renovation project is a rewarding investment, but you have to keep to a budget and add in breathing room for unexpected costs that might arise.
