In honour of Fathers Day I am dedicating this to my Dad.
My Dad was born at the end of the Great Depression on a farm in south western Ontario about 30 minutes from Kitchener-Waterloo. He is one of the best story tellers I have ever known. I recall as a kid sitting across from my Dad at the kitchen table and listening to him tell stories about my great grandparents, my grandparents and the various events in his life. When my kids and I visit my parent’s farm you are sure to hear one of my Dad’s stories while sitting at the kitchen table.
My parents still operate a working farm and live a very simple life. They have a large garden that supplies most of their produce in the summer months. They raise various types of livestock which also provide food for their table. They use a woodstove primarily as a heat source in the winter and no air conditioning in the summer, they have several large trees surround the house to shade and cool the house. They conserve their water as it comes from the well on their farm and in the dry summer months the level can be quite low and they need to be aware of their water usage. They have always composted the kitchen scraps and fertilized the farm with natural sources such as the manure from the various animals on the farm. My Dad never believed in using pesticides on the land or hormones on his livestock.
My Dad has always done throughout this life, what we as a society are now coming to realize is so very important if we are to take care of mother earth for our future generations.
1. Living organic
2. Conserving water
3. Use alternate energy sources
4. Buy local produce or grow your own
5. Respecting mother earth
