The weather keeps changing day to day, but we are seeing those first nice days that herald the beginning of spring. Spring is always a good time to start thinking about getting rid of the stuff you don’t like – and picking up a few things to liven up your home.
Here’s a couple of suggestions when you are on your next Sunday afternoon shop in the spring sunshine:
Floral Print Pillows
Adding floral prints, whether in a sundress or a furnishing, always adds a bit of sun to your home, doesn’t it? But rather than going for a more traditional floral pattern, try something more graphic. I really like very stylized designs with flat colours and maybe a slight pop of orange or blue.
Or if you want something very distinctive, choose pillows with photorealistic shots of verdant countryside. These work well with a very neutral, modernist couch.
Lanterns
You don’t want to go the Kim Mitchell route and hang up patio lanterns, but a few nice metal or antique lanterns add light to a room: figuratively and literally. If you choose something durable and non-seasonal, the piece can follow you inside and outside your home. A citronella candle-based lamp could even help you get away from the mosquitos in the summer!
Silkscreening
Decorative silkscreened images are a really fun way to add sparkle to your room. You’ve probably seen the popular “Keep Calm and Carry On,” but you can add literally anything you want. Even better – with the use of a home silk-screening kit – you can customize it yourself!
Try to go for neutral or historical statements, if you do silk screen words. You don’t want to turn them into bumper stickers of your political beliefs, after all. Nice ones to consider are your province’s coat of arms, or a non-cheesy adage.
White retro chairs
Nothing says spring like white, and adding a few chairs to your house can help add vim without breaking your bank. And white curvy modernist chairs are very hot right now: think of school, but without all the work. They are great for office tables, or if you choose higher ones, for placing under your bar.
