As it stands, Albertans do not need to waste $14 billion on over-built power lines. What is needed is a power industry leader as an independent regulator free of political manipulation.
What has just been said is a message from Gary Holden, president of Enmax Corp.
The Conservative government and two of its corporate friends want Albertan consumers to pay for high priced lines.
What is really needed, is natural gas-fired “peak demand” generating capacity close to the customers who buy it. They also need a utilities board that is given full authority to decide what the needs are, and who will respond to them.
Enmax, the major power retailer in Southern Alberta, is set to open one of those “peak” power plants next month, which is a 120 megawatt facility near Crossfield.
This is a publicly owned utility is also planning an 800 megawatt “energy centre” southeast of Calgary near Sheppard and a 165 megawatt “downtown” base-load plant in the city’s Bonybrook industrial.
Both plants at Sheppard and Bonnybrook will be selling their surplus hear to neighbouring businesses to eliminate furnaces or boilers being used, giving another advantage of placing power generation close to consumers.
From these power plants, it will give people less expensive energy and providing less of an environmental impact.
As it stands, natural gas remains to be the lowest-cost fuel for power generation, with a far less impact on the environment compared to coal. Wind power is now the second lowest, with virtually no emissions.
With energy becoming more affordable it helps residents of Alberta live more efficiently having to worry a little less about their energy bill.
