If you are thinking of living in a downtown market, you might be interested in buying a condominium. But while condos can be potentially affordable places to buy, they can suffer from a major lack: they can be lacking free space. And if you are decorating this sort of space, how can you make the most of what you have? In this article, we’ll give you some tips on how to maximize the space you have.

1. Avoid breaking up the space by keeping a consistent palette throughout your condo. The more you change up your decorating scheme, the smaller every room and separate area will appear. For drapes, use a similar palette that is slightly lighter or darker than the surrounding walls. It will help to create a soft frame for your rooms.

2. Choose custom pieces that are flexible in their use. One comfortable, well-designed armchair can probably fit into any design scheme and will be of more use to you than a collection of ramshackle or over-designed pieces. Persian rugs, large artworks, and a custom couch are also good choices. A few, large pieces rather than a lot of clutter is what you are looking for.

3. When you can, add spacious pieces. A large headboard, tall mirrors or a floor-to-ceiling shelving unit can make the space you have look bigger because it creates a sense of grandeur in a small space.

4. Invest in technology. A flat screen television will create the illusion of space without taking up a lot of room. Get rid of bulky stereo systems and use a computer with a pair of discreet speakers instead.

5. Define your spaces with subtle pieces rather than anything large. Rather than blocking off areas with chairs and tables, use rugs to delineate the different uses of a multi-purpose room. Use a lamp to break up a space without making it darker. Art or photos on the walls can also help create these invisible lines.

Small can be cozy or constricting, depending on how you decorate it. You will likely make the best of it if you concentrate on making a few good choices rather than throwing something together out of desperation.
