Work is continuing on several fronts on Altalink Management`s $190 million project electrical transmission line which will link power substations at Pincher Station and north Lethbrdige.
This line has been approved by Alberta Utilities Commission on March 10th, and will be expected to be in service in the first half of 2010.
This new line will be able to move 1,000 megawatts of electricity; all of it is collected from wind farms, east of Pincher Creek. This allows Alberta to become the leader in wind energy generation in Canada.
A concern which was addressed was having the valley transmission line buried; this was made in a public hearing from the City of Lethbridge.
Having this energy source helps make Canada, particularly the City of Lethbridge a greener location.
The construction also created jobs for people, which helps push the Canadian economy forward. Up to 150 jobs will be created, which includes 45-50 for First Nation workers.
At the peak of construction, which is from September to December, there will be about 120 – 150 people working on the southwest site. There is a commitment written in the criteria for contractors that they must hire First Nation workers.
Having this form of energy will help Canada keep up with the world in making a greener environment. I for one am glad to see this project underway, and cannot wait to see the service put forward next year.
