The City of Medicine Hat is bringing out brand new grew plastic garbage bins on wheels. Every home in town will have one at their disposal and will revolutionize garbage collection.
The first homes to begin receiving these new garbage bins were homes in North West Crescent Heights, collection Zone 2, as they began receiving them Wednesday afternoon.
By the end of September, every home should have one. There will be about 19,600 garbage bins delivered in total.
The first pick up for these new garbage bins will be next Tuesday, and the City of Medicine Hat will no longer be accepting garbage from any other containers once a cart has been delivered to the home.
Now each bin has instructions under the lid that holds answers to frequently asked questions. Each bin also contains a number and the City of Medicine Hat has a record as to which bin is delivered to each home.
These new bins are expected to make waste collection neater, cleaner, safer and overall more efficient. This change came about as many workers were getting injured from having to carry excessive amounts of garbage in varying container sizes.
Home owners are expected that they keep their bins clean by using a garbage bag inside the bin. Each bin has the capacity to hold about 30 grocery bags, or the equivalent of 5 large black garbage bags.
The carts must be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day and it will be returned to the owner’s property by 7 a.m. the next day.
This is truly a great idea to help increase the efficiency of garbage collection, and the wheels on the bins will help both home owners and garbage collectors, making transporting the bin much easier.
