City administration is looking into possible ways to enhance safety at a downtown crosswalk where an elderly woman was recently killed while crossing the street.
The city council gave that direction to administration since a response written request from the Green Acres Foundation to step up and measure at the intersection of Scenic Drive South and 5th Avenue South.
She lived in Black Rock Terrace, one of two Green Acres seniors facilities located just west of the intersection.
The letter sent to the council, foundation chairman Bill Martens stated the woman’s death could have been prevents if the stop lines had been painted clearly to keep drivers further back from the crosswalk.
It is important that we have the city made to suit all of the residents, especially the older generation as they helped shape the city to what it is today.
The administrators have been asked to consider a pedestrian educator program for residents to complement the intersection improvements the foundation is seeking.
It is important we do not see any deaths from these kinds of mistakes, which was the fact that the stop lines were not painted clearly to keep drivers further back from the crosswalk.
With talks to make the city a safer place, it can ensure that all generations have a place to live and grow up safely in.
